Procrastination: Finding Grace and Growth in the Process

Procrastination: Uncovering the Why

Today, we’re tackling procrastination, a common hurdle a lot of us face. We can’t expect to change this deeply engrained mindset overnight, you must show yourself grace as you grow in the process!

Understanding the root cause of why we procrastinate is essential for change. Whether it’s fear of failure, lack of motivation, or feeling overwhelmed, it’s critical to ask ourselves why we’re avoiding specific tasks.

When we choose to bring our unhealthy and unproductive thoughts and mindsets out in the light, we can begin to untangle them and move forward with intention.

Common Causes of Procrastination

  • Fear of Failure: Perfectionism often leads us to avoid tasks for fear of not executing them perfectly.
  • Lack of Motivation/Interest: Overwhelming or boring tasks can easily be put off.
  • Overwhelm and Poor Time Management: A lack of structure and clear priorities may lead to last-minute scrambles.
  • Self-Compassion and Stress: Being hard on ourselves can exacerbate procrastination.

Strategies to Overcome Procrastination

To address these challenges, I recommend several strategies:

  1. Break Down Tasks: Large tasks can be overwhelming. Break them into smaller, manageable steps and set timers to make gradual progress. This will give you the ability to see how small tasks make a huge difference to getting you to your goals!
  2. Reflect Intentionally: Regularly reflect on your goals and intentions. This reflection can help clarify your purpose and keep you motivated. This should be done every day in one way or another.
  3. Give Yourself Grace: Remember, it’s okay not to be perfect. Celebrate small victories and acknowledge your efforts! Even saying out loud how awesome you are for what you are tacking! This stuff is hard!

Spiritual Growth and Accountability

Of course, above all the planning, deciding, list making you MUST include God in your journey.

Regular prayer and reflection with Him can give you the guidance and support your spirit needs as you work towards the productivity and spiritual growth you are craving

  • Weekly Reflection: Spend time with God reviewing your progress and setting intentions for the week.
  • Monthly Evaluation: Assess your action plan, adjust your priorities, and celebrate your wins, no matter how small!

Be sure you are WRITING ALL OF THIS DOWN there is science that proves we can help solidify our plans when we actually put pen to paper! Let your brain help you!!
